Arthur Frommer's 20 best bargains this week
Though others will disagree (because nothing is more subjective than travel), these are my own personal choices of the top, cost-conscious holidays for the 90 days to come:
1. $525 for an all-inclusive beachside week (in June) in the Dominican Republic (rising to $605 in July). It includes round-trip air transportation, with no need to spend a penny extra other than for taxes of $330. That near-miracle of pricing is offered by Canada’s Sunwing on Tuesday departures from Toronto throughout the year, nonstop to the resort of Punta Cana, for a week of all-inclusive arrangements (air, transfers, hotel for seven nights, three meals daily, unlimited drinks) at the Tropical Princess Beach Hotel. Go to the Sunwing website , or phone 800-761-1711 or 416-620-3380.
2. $798 to $999 for a week’s Caribbean cruise on the elegant Celebrity Solstice, every week from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from now until November. Hailed as a new breed of near-deluxe ship when it was launched last year, dignified in atmosphere, programs and facilities (no hi-jinks here, no rock-climbing walls or bowling alleys), spacious in rooms and public areas, big (2,800-passenger capacity) and yet upscale, which makes its minimum price of $798 to $999 per person for inside cabins such a surprising bargain. Go to Celebrity Cruises online, or phone 800-647-2251, for more information. Airfare to Florida is not included.
